Episode XI
Episode 11: To-marrow. to-marrow... The time for bone marrow transplant approached. So many people had helped Nana get this far, how could Tim show them all? There were prayers that were being offered from coast to coast; from the Islamic Center in Los Angeles to Jewish Synagogues, to Christian Churches, to a prayer line on the Internet! There was the anonymous "miracle man" who donated $10,000 of his own money to make the transplant possible. There were doctors and nurses and aides in Maine and Florida. It simply is not possible to thank each of the wonderful people who contributed to bring this story this far.
The answer Tim hit upon was a "crowd scene." Tim took a picture of the hospital that Nana and Papa had sent and modeled his centerpiece around it. The crowd outside the hospital included three "wise men" who carried money (the anonymous donor), baby blood cells (all the blood donors, unknown and unnamed), and an wrapped birthday present (the day of a bone marrow transplant is often referred to as a "second (new) birthday". To the left is a group of people in prayer while the main group includes placards with symbols representing the three major religions who kept Nana in their prayers.
Tim retained the humor in his comics despite the grave and serious nature of the real events. In this episode, he labels the bone marrow "B.M." and has someone ask, "You’re going to cure her with WHAT!?" And if you look carefully at the crowd scene, you will notice the heads of Waldo (from "Where’s Waldo©"), Jon Luc Picard (from "Star Trek, the Next Generation©"), and Homer Simpson (from Fox TV’s "The Simpsons©"). -
You should also note that Lorraine has on a t-shirt that reads, "Perfect Match." Nana and her sister wore these shirts in real life to celebrate the fact that, as twins, their bone marrow is identical and has an excellent chance of working. the needed miracle. Also, there is a heart carved into the tree with "MJ + RH" (Marian Jordan and Robert Haldane) and one of the clouds is an angel!
